"Tomasz Biernacki's new documentary about the homeless crisis in Seattle is a must-see. It deftly interweaves in-depth stories and interviews of community members who are living the crisis on the streets with interviews of political leaders and community advocates, vivid images of the current state of affairs, and a poignant examination of the roots of homelessness in the region. Biernacki paints a picture of a city struggling to come to grips with an unprecedented emergency, and finds glimmers of hope.

"Strange Fruit draws its title from the 1937 poem and song of the same name by Abel Meeropol and made famous by the great jazz singer Billie Holiday.

"The lyrics are an extended metaphor linking a tree's fruit with lynching victims. The impetus for this world premiere work is the employment of lynching as a tool of racial terrorism during the Jim Crow Era.

"For this dance/theater work, the facts of lynching act as a springboard into a highly personal interior space and state of mind. Strange Fruit tracks choreographer Donald Byrd's feelings as a response to lynching and plays out as a series of dance/theater vignettes. For more information, visit spectrumdance.org/areyouwoke." "Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts—I had the luxury of my grandmother cooking—all the time. [ Ironically ] I vaguely remember any of her dishes. I was always told by my sister and my mother—she (my grandmother) did all of the cooking. After she passed, that luxury went away. My mother rarely cooked and never taught me. It wasn't until after I had my first child, while in the United States Army—I taught myself how to cook. Coming from a family with Honduran descent, I'm heavily influenced by Latin, Carribean & Indian cuisines. They're all a representation of me and my family."
