Guidance & Policies on Using AI

Like many news organizations, the South Seattle Emerald™ faces a media landscape that is increasingly impacted by the use of generative AI to create text, images, graphics, multimedia content, and more. After referring to Poynter’s AI policy template and conducting our own research and internal dialogue, the Emerald™ has created an AI policy for published content.

In short, we pledge to not use generative AI to write articles and captions; create images or illustrations; fact-check pieces; or edit articles. If we use AI for certain background/digital work, such as generating headline suggestions or creating ideas for social media posts, we will inform readers how and when AI was used.

As we gain more knowledge into the uses of AI, we will update our full AI policy.
